Villainous vittles, aka, nefarious nutrition

Postby sapper09 » Sun Feb 20, 2011 7:42 am

Could you please give a bit of info on your approach to nutrition?

We eat pretty much paleo in our house and would prefer to keep it that way - is this a hindrance to getting strong? You seem to be a fan of some protein supplementation, ie shakes, etc. Are these preferential to milk, or to be had with milk? At the moment, I'm ~85kg, I would say skinny weak (although bigger than I used to be) with a little extra BF.

I have used milk PWO before, should I switch to protein powder? I'm not sure how much protein i should be taking in, but i don't think I'm getting enough per day. What should I look for if I do go the protein supp route - brands, content, etc? I don't have heaps to spend, btw :(

Sorry about all the questions, but a little guidance would really come in handy!

Cheers, JP.

Just keep doing the Paleo thing. I am a big fan of food quality.

If you are trying to grow, deliberately up your portions and add in the sweet potatoes and other effective carbs, read: vegetables do not count.

Milk is not necessarily the enemy for all, but possesses no god like powers as others may have you believe. In addition most will rely on it to the point that it contributes to the growth of their waistline more than anything.

Just get a decent whey protein powder and use that liberally throughout the day. Those simple changes will go a long way.

Any more specific questions I will gladly address.

When I first started training the idea was to throw a bunch of everything at the wall and see what sticks. (Milk, cheeseburgers, pizza) It worked great for recovery, but it also stuck on my belly region.

Now I throw sharp protein laden axes that stick in muscle and slice through fat.

JP has said this many times before...and it goes back to the old you are what you eat saying. A steak and rice built body will look better than a milk and cheeseburger built body any day.

I really like my scotch and bourbon, and have a glass a few nights of the week. Is this something that will have a particularly deleterious effect on my weight loss efforts or is it not a deal breaker? I've been following the carb cutoffs with this one exception.

You'll be fine. It's what you do most of the time that matters, not what you do some of the time.

The shakes you have your clients drink, the receipie is 50/50 mixture of oats and whey + peanut butter.

Milk or no milk, and im assuming is a modest amount of PB

Thanks JP

Correction, and illustration of why sticky threads on nutrition can be dangerous, the shake you are mentioning is what SOME clients drink. One's whose situation makes such a shake applicable.

Important distinction. We don't need another flock of skinny fat people with man boobs drinking a gallon of milk a day to develop on the internet.

For you though V (since I am somewhat familiar with your situation) it would be oats/whey at 50/50 mixed in 2% milk with about 2 TBSP of PB. That would be two shakes early on in the day. Night time would be protein only.

Standby for the release of the Greyskull Performance Nutrition line of MRP's and powders to help eliminate some of the guess work for everyone.

Sorry, i may be being dense here, but could you please clarify this statement - the vegetables don't count bit, i'm confused! They are pretty much the only carbs i get, along w/ some fruit, fresh or dried.

What, to you, characterises a decent whey powder? Eg, does it have to be 100% wpi, or can it be mixed with wpc? I've been looking at something like this:

http://www.vitaminking.com.au/100-whey- ... lance.html

Finally, is there a general rule for how much protein i need a day? I'm 25, 6', 80-85kg and the immediate goals are to get stronger and faster. Size would be a bonus, but at the moment aesthetics are secondary to actual strength/speed.

Thanks again, JP! :D

PS. Expect an email re. your tour down under, i received a couple more venue suggestions.
