SWOLE question

Postby TallAndThin » Wed Mar 30, 2016 11:11 am

Couldn't find the answer in the book so I thought I'd ask: the book recommends for the first several meals a portion of protein and two portions of carbs. My breakfast typically consists of three eggs, 2/3rd cup rice, and a large portion (around 6 cups) of vegetables such as cabbage/broccoli/carrot/onion/tomato/spinach. Normally I wouldn't count vegetables as a portion of carbs but because it's such a large quantity does it count as one of the two servings? Or should I eat something else like oatmeal?

I do something similar at lunch with about 8 cups of vegetables, more rice, and a protein.

If the pile of vegetables don't count I'm way undereating on the carbs.

If you're following the principles in SWOLE for the purpose of gaining mass, then NO, vegetables absolutely do not count as carbohydrates.

It's next to impossible to gain significant body mass while not eating carbohydrates, or drastically limiting them. Some have argued with me on this, and have preached a more "paleo" mass gain, but their idea of growth is usually putting on something like eight pounds in two years (a small exaggeration perhaps), taking a guy from 165 at 6' to 173 for example.

If you want to grow, you need the carbs.
